Should I invite children who have only been prescribed SABA?

You can invite children who have only been prescribed SABA so far if, after reviewing the patients notes, you think they have asthma that requires an ICS inhaler too.

What is the maximum daily dose of ICS for children in the symptom driven group?

If SABA has been required, children should take ICS (Beclomethasone, Fluticasone propionate or Budesonide) up to 200 mcg/24 hours for 6-11 year olds, 400 mcg/24hours for 12-16 year olds.

Children and parents could achieve this in the following ways, depending on what they feel works best for their circumstances at the time:

• Each time SABA is used, take ICS inhalation up to four times per calendar day, or over the 24 hours following the SABA dose (50 mcg Beclomethasone, Budesonide or Fluticasone propionate for 6-11 year olds; 100 mcg Beclometasone or Budesonide or Fluticasone propionate for 12-16 year olds).

• If SABA is required overnight, take two puffs of ICS in the morning (50 mcg Beclomethasone or Budesonide or Fluticasone propionate for 6-11 year olds, 100 mcg for 12-16 year olds); take ICS in the evening if SABA was used that day.
